Major Dermot Mc Calmont was son of Sir Hugh Mc Calmont and Lady Rose Elizabeth Bingham Mc Calmont.

Major Dermot purchased Mount Juliet Estate after having a short lease of it, from the Earl of Carrick in 1914 and immediately established Ballylynch Stud Farm with the already world renown Terarch retired to Stud. Tetrarch was the sire to such well known horses as Polemarch, Caligula, Salmon-trout, Mumtaz-Mehal, Tetratema and other famous winners. He was also Master of the Kilkenny Hunt.
