Fleetwood Berry (1912 A), gives the inscription along with a rough sketch of the arms. Hardiman (1820), 221-3 lists John Gibbs as sheriff in the years 1691, 1716 and as mayor in 1708 and 1729.

Notes:

The monument is a R.S., now reused as paving. A rectangular piece has been partly cut from the lower right comer of the stone for reuse as paving. This piece has been crudely pocked in advance of the manufacture of a piece of paving stone which was never carried out frilly. The Ins. is cut in low false relief. It is the second one to have been carved on the stone, traces of at least two lines of an earlier one occur near the top of the stone and these have been interrupted by die carving of the shield. The letters "BOD" are the only ones which can be identified with any certainty from the earlier inscription. It is possible that wording similar to that which now occurs was formerly present, the letters "BOD" being part of the word "BODY". An incised curve occurs above the "Y", perhaps an "e" from the word "Ye". Above the Ins. is a coat of arms, also in low false relief. The shield has a flat chief, straight sides and a triangular - almost ogee-shaped base. The arms has two rows of lozenges across the fess of the shield and an animal passant in chief and in base. A u-shaped notch cut across the middle of the top of the shield may suggest the former presence of a crest, as the u-shaped notch may be part of the neck section of a helmet.
