SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF GEORGE FREDERICK DE CARTERET, ENSIGN IN HER MAJESTY’S 30™ REGIMENT, SON OF THE LATE MAJOR DE CARTERET, OF THE HONBLE EAST INDIA COMPANY’S SERVICE, AND ELIZABETH HIS WIFE, BOTH NATIVES OF JERSEY. HIS LAMENTABLE DEATH WAS OCCASIONED BY WANT OF LIGHTS ON THE DOCKS, INTO WHICH HE FELL AND WAS DROWNED, DURING A DARK AND TEMPESTUOUS NIGHT, ON THE 21ST OF MARCH 1843, AT THE EARLY AGE OF 22. DEPLORING HER IRREPARABLE LOSS AND BEARING IN REMEMBRANCE HIS MANY VIRTUES, HIS CHILDLESS MOTHER HAS CAUSED THIS MONUMENT TO BE ERECTED. HE WAS "THE ONLY SON OF HIS MOTHER, AND SHE WAS A WIDOW." These arms show a wide variety of elements which go to make up a full achievement of Arms. The shield bears the arms, this is topped by a crest with mantling coming out of the bade of a helmet and a crest wreath with a squirrel. The supporters (winged stags in this case),support the shield below which is a motto scroll with the family motto Loyal Devoir. Drawing by Jennifer McKenna.

This is a white marble plaque attached to a limestone backing. The Ins. is carved on the scroll, above this is a dove holding a wreath in its beak, below is the De Carteret arms. The arms bears a row of lozenges (four fusils) and is flanked by a pair of winged stags which act as supporters. The crest consists of a squirrel seated on a crest wreath on top of a nobleman's helmet. The motto "Loyal Devoir" occurs on the motto scroll beneath. The stone also bears the words "Patent Works Esher St. WestmR". The burial place is in the graveyard. (See No. 215).
