To the memory/ of/ Captain JAMES SAMSON/ of/ the 70th Regiment of Infantry/ Who fell, a sacrifice to his zeal/ in the service of his Country/ on the 6th of March 1832/ in the 55th year of his age/ after an honourable Professional Career/ of 37 years./ This tablet is erected by his brother Officers/ as a Testimonial of their high sense of his worth/ as a Man and a Soldier.
Mural plaque comprising a pedimented panel in black-marble onto which is fixed an inscription tablet of white marble in the form of a shield. The tympanum of the pediment contains the fixings for a motif, which is now lost. A geometric pattern occupies the architrave above the inscribed panel.
