FitzGerald (1895-97), 462 gives the inscription as we, too have recorded it, except that he could also make out an "R" after the 6th word. Fleetwood Berry (1912 A), 70, passim mentions two hammers instead of three. Fleetwood Berry, (Ed. Higgins) (1989), 70 footnote. A new reading of the inscription is given here. Hayward (1952), 44 passim, illus. p. 45.

The top part of a large slab bearing an Ins. and three crowned hammers which are traditionally supposed to be the mark of a goldsmith. The fragment is well preserved and the lettering is boldly cut in false relief.
