The Foott family have farmed in this area since the late 1600's and before that they were extensive landowners in the Killavullen area and owned Springfort Hall which is about 3 miles north east of Mallow town.They played a prominent role in helping the Newman family to settle in Kilshannig following their acquisition of large tracts of land after the Cromwellian confiscations of Dromineen Castle and lands from the O Callaghan Clan.They got a substantial lease of land from the Newmans at  a reasonable  rent in about 1686 in return and built Millfort House in the early 1700's where the sugar factory was later constructed.This residence fell into disrepair in the mid 1800's and the Footts moved  to Newberry House beside this graveyard in the early 1900's.This was a Newman Manor House before they built a new one in Dromore which is now part of the HSE's Nazareth House complex.  The Foott family changed the name  to Kilshannig House when they acquired it.The nearby grounds contain one of the few surviving pack horse bridges still intact in County Cork. Colonel Richard Foott was a commander in the North Cork Militia  who fought at  the battle of Oulart  in Co.Wexford during the 1798 rebellion where over 100 of his army were slaughtered but he managed to escape. Many more of the Foott family are interred in this tomb but are not recorded on the headstone.The entrance to the tomb consists of about seven steep steps that are covered by a mound of earth. The Foott family were caretakers of Kilshannig Church and Graveyard  before they were handed over to Cork County Council in the early 1980's.
