Gate of Heaven, Abbeyleix

Graveyard situated in rural setting, close to farmhouse, east of Abbeyleix town.
Graveyard contains only memorial stones dated 1840-1920; 'In memory of destitute people died in the workhouse, Abbeyleix, interred here'. Reported to be 2000 pauper burials in this burial ground (also called Shankyard).
Graveyard has triangular shape; boundaries approx. 1m high; rubble wall to the east, hedge to the west and north. No paths; ground surface level. Located beside roadside.
