John Sullivan was the eldest son of William Connor Sullivan and Dora Tresilian. (William was the brother of Thomas Kingston Sullivan of the Retreat).  John was baptised at Christ Church in 1840.  He married Emily Rose Leonard in 1864.  He had a brother Richard Tresilian Sullivan who became a doctor and emigrated to Australia.   His sister, Hester Anne Sullivan, married William Livingston Leachman in 1883 who became an Episcopal clergyman in the United States.  His sister, Mary Kingston Sullivan (Minnie) married Alfred Richard Leonard and moved to Cork City.

John was a rate collector and brewery manager by the time of the 1901 census.  John and Emily Rose had at least the following children, Letitia Emily Rose, Henrietta and Robert who became a Bank Clerk
