THIS TABLET

Has been raised by the afflicted parents

to record the death of a much loved son

AUGUSTUS JONATHAN CLERKE

Captain Royal Engineers

Talented amiable and truly religious and

Gallant and scientific officer he whilst still

Suffering from severe wounds previously received

Was killed when in the performance of his

Duty at LUCKNOW in the EAST INDIES on the

17th of March 1838

The last day of the successful operations

Against that revolted city where his remains

Now rest

He was the eldest son of

MAJOR GENERAL ST JOHN A. CLERKE K.H.

Colonel of the 75th Regiment

And fell in the 29th year of his age

His melancholy death the Service has sustained a
