Sacred to the memory of
HENRY PEPPER GARVEY
Mate of H.M. Ship Shannon
Youngest son of George Garvey Esqr
of Thorn Vale in this Parish
Born 6th June 1837
Fell in the gallant discharge of his duty
At the capture of Lucknow in Oude
11th March 1858.
He served in the Royal Navy with such ability and zeal
As called forth the highest commendations from
His different Captains taking an active part in the
Russian war in the Baltic and Black Sea and in
The Sepoy Mutiny in the East Indies in 1857
When he was attached to the Naval Brigade
Formed from the crew of H.M. Ship Shannon
Under the command of her Captain
The Late Gallant Sir William Peel K.C.B.
He took distinguished part in all
the daring deeds of that noble band
Till he was suddenly called to yield up
His young and ardent spirit
Into the hands of Him who gave it.
Leaving to his sorrow stricken family the
Proud rememberance of his brilliant tho short career
In his country’s service.
And the tender recollection of his singularly
trusting, simple faith in his God and Saviour
And of the many gentle virtues that
So endeared him to their hearts:
Their only consolations in the
Assurance that he exchanged the
Prospect of earthly honours
For a crown of glory
That fadeth not away
Youngest son of George Garvey Esq of Thornvale
